Transportation Solutions

Look at the Future

Microsimulation enables the transportation professional to study many factors relating to transportation projects:

  • the effects of a development,
  • a change in the road network (like road closures or restrictions),
  • traffic calming effects in a neighbourhood,
  • Traffic Demand Management (TDM) effects,
  • traffic signal timing effects,
  • streetscape programs,
  • access redevelopment (commercial or residential), and
  • multiple future scenarios on a network of intersections from a local neighbourhood to an entire municipality that may be affected.

This proactive approach to transportation analysis closely simulates the actual driver behaviour and randomness that is experienced in the real world.

Microsimulation is perfect for council presentations and for illustrating the effects of decisions to the general public. Changes in the transportation network from increased traffic, or changes in traffic patterns can be easily surmised by watching the simulation, rather than by looking in a table that compares calculated values. This microsimulation can illustrate graphically the typical measures of effectiveness on the simulation itself to further demonstrate its usefulness.

Adept Transportation Solutions has the experience and the leading software to produce simulations of your traffic network system. Measures of vehicle emissions as well as standard Highway Capacity Manual measures including delay per vehicle, queue lengths, average speed, and more are easily calculated and compared between scenarios. Animation of your traffic network can take place over either an AutoCAD drawing file or an aerial photo to enhance the realism of the display. All modelled to scale, this makes for a very effective presentation; it even includes pedestrians in the animation.

Experience

Adept has significant experience in microsimulation projects that range from a small municipality to major city centres across Western Canada. Microsimulation services have been used by:

  • Provincial authorities (MoT),
  • Municipal authorities (Sidney, Parksville, Sooke, Duncan, Victoria, Saanich),
  • Consultants (Keycorp Consulting, RCL Consulting),
  • Architects (Eric Barker, William's + D'Ambrosio, Idealink, InSite),
  • Various Groups (David Cameron PAC, University of Victoria, BC Ferries), and we have been contracted on various projects by these engineering firms:
  • Boulevard, Stantec, Bunt, Focus.

We have been involved in many of Victoria's major development projects and municipal core simulation studies. For a more comprehensive list of the the significant projects we have been involved in, check here.

Certification

It is important to know that our staff has been formally trained by industry experts in the following software programs:

  • Synchro/SimTraffic: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced (Trafficware's John Albeck)
  • CORSIM: Beginner, Intermediate (Odetics Consulting)
  • HCS-2000: Advanced training on all modules (Northwestern University)
  • AutoCAD (Camosun College)
  • Autodesk MAP (Camosun College)
  • PAMAP (University of Victoria)
